The Recession Mother Without a Job – A Blog Entry
By Angela Baca 12/10

Being a parent in the recession is hard for everyone, but being a mother without a job is especially difficult. When you
cannot afford to buy everything you might normally buy for the kids, you learn quickly to swallow your pride and find
creative approaches to family finances. Here are some ideas for keeping the right perspective as a jobless mother in the
recession.

1. Your unemployment status does not define you as a mother. You define your role as a mother. The recession is the
perfect time to focus on quality relationship with your kids. When kids think back on their childhoods, they will remember
happy times when money is not a factor in addition to those expensive trips to Disney World. Be proud of who you are
and what your role is in the family.

2. Working mothers may not have as much time as they might like to get involved in their child’s learning. When you do
not have to report to work, spend more time helping your child learn at home. Invest time in educational activities
including reading, arts and crafts, creative writing, outdoor exploration, and library discovery.

3. Non-working moms can help build their child’s school culture by becoming a school volunteer. With economic
troubles on your mind, working in a classroom with bright-eyed children is a great way to maintain your positive outlook.
Your kids will see you differently in this role, and your contribution will make a difference in the lives of children.

4. The unemployed mother can use the time when the kids are away from the home to engage in self-discovery. When
you worked, was there much time for reflecting on your values, beliefs, goals, and health? Chances are that you always
need more time for self-reflection. Whether you decide to attend church more often, meditate, or read self-help books,
use this time to explore your needs and wants. Your inner being changes over time. While your budget may not provide
for spa visits, self-discovery may keep you grounded.

Your role as a mother is a key element of your identity. Choose not to look at the recession as a difficult time. The
recession represents a huge opportunity. Use your creativity to organize your time differently. Maintaining a positive
attitude will reduce the stress of being unemployed.
